The Opera Park
Operaparken is the name of the new green free space, which will be located in the heart of Copenhagen on the South Island between the Opera and Papirøen. The park will be a recreational area with space for contemplation, and where the peaceful park slows down the pace a little.
The Opera Park is inspired by 19th-century romantic gardens and romantic landscape paintings. In the park, you will be able to experience trees, plants and flowers from all over the world, which have been carefully selected according to their color variation throughout the year. The park's flora will thus change in appearance, fragrance, colors and density according to the seasons and depending on where in the park you are staying.
The park will consist of six different gardens with landscape themes from around the world: North American forest, Danish oak forest, Oriental forest, English garden, Nordic forest and the tropical greenhouse. The lush ground will also continue on the park's stairwell roof, which will consist of wild and flowering grasses.
The organically shaped greenhouse will be centrally located in the Opera Park with a café and conservatory. The planting in the greenhouse is different from the rest of the park, where the plants can withstand the Danish climate. In the greenhouse, Mediterranean conditions are established with the help of the solar panels on the Opera's roof. The greenhouse leads down to an underground parking facility on two floors with 300 parking spaces. Parking spaces that are future-proofed with plenty of options for charging electric cars.
A 12 meter tall Ficus Alii tree is planted in the middle of the greenhouse in the parking area. With its height, the tree will reach into the greenhouse's café, where guests can sit under the tree canopy and enjoy refreshments.
From the park and the car park it will be possible to get over to the Opera in shelter from wind and weather.
Climate friendliness and ecological cycle
The Opera Park has been designed with wind and weather in mind, which is why biodiversity and climate friendliness are a comprehensive approach. The rainwater is treated as a special resource for the park and is directed from roofs and pavements into so-called delay beds. The excess water ends up in underground water reservoirs that are used to irrigate the park. In addition, the materials in the park are long-lasting and can be reused.
The park's many different plant species will contribute to biodiversity and become habitats for insects and birds. Ranging from native species to the more exotic. The underground car park and the above-ground park constitute both an ecological and an economic circuit. Just as rainwater is reused for irrigation, the income from the parking will finance the park's operation and maintenance.
The Opera Park was donated by the AP Møller Foundation in 2019. The park is expected to open in 2023.
The Danish architectural firm COBE designed the Opera Park.
