Adaptive skins and structures for the built environment of tomorrow

The demonstrator high-rise building (D1244) is a unique project worldwide, built on the campus of the University of Stuttgart. Here, fourteen institutes of the university have been working together in close interdisciplinary exchange since January 2017. The researchers are jointly investigating the question of how more living space can be created with less material in the future in view of a growing world population and shrinking resources.
The SFB was founded at the time by Prof. Dr. Dr. E.h. Dr. h.c. Sobek and has now been continued since 2021 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Oliver Sawodny, who heads the Collaborative Research Centre as its spokesperson.

Through the development of novel adaptive concepts for all areas of the built environment, the CRC 1244 stands for a sustainable architecture that takes the responsibility of economical, ecological and sociocultural issues. The basis for defining these goals is the common conviction of all partners that material and energy consumption in the construction process must be extremely reduced in the near future - while at the same time increasing user comfort.
Adaptivity in the built environment requires a fundamental transformation of the architectural design of buildings. Accordingly, the CRC 1244 is concerned about the development of individual structural components as well as their integration into the overall system. Both being equally important. Only through this integral approach can construction meet the challenges of our time.
